We were free to create the traditional blocks or reimagine them... I decided on the latter.
Here's my table runner with my variation of the North Carolina Star block. I decided to remove the four point pieces that would normally go in the middle of that light coloured triangle. You can see what I mean a little better in the image of the die, below.
As it's spring here and I'm heading toward a very hot summer (as the weather presenters keep warning), I decided to use some cool colours in my project. The fabrics I used are all foundations and blenders and available all year round. Foundations in Periwinkle, Mint, Marine and Blender is Dandelion in bubblegum.
The batting was a piece of Hobbs Thermore, which was left over from a previous quilt project and Schmetz Microtex needles for the block piecing and quilting.
I used Aurifil 50wt in this project. I pieced the block pieces in a royal blue cotton thread (the light cream thread was too visible in the dark blue when I tried a sample). I was very undecided as to how I'd quilt this piece. Finally, I followed the *K.I.S.S principle and used the light cream thread to stitch in the ditch within the blocks and the royal blue to stitch in the ditch around the borders and for the binding.
As always, thanks to Island Batik for setting a fun challenge for us.
