Carla of Creatin' in the Sticks set us this challenge: "Create something inspired by the color orange. Think orange, think citrus, think orange peel, or maybe the joke about 'orange you glad we didn't say banana!' Anything orange. You decide."
Well to say that my brain has been fuzzy lately and is an understatement. I dithered with ideas for this project and was thinking maybe I should go down the orange peel route. I do love an orange peel quilt project...
I decided to open up my orange scrap bag and have a little play with the different fabrics and ended up making some scrappy orange flowers. I'm calling them my Orange Lolli-poppies. See what I did there?
To make this, I started by making the background panel using low volume fabric scraps. Once I had a piece large enough to work with, I layed out my pieces which were to be my flowers. I added my batting to the back and pinned pieces in place then headed to the sewing machine.
The stems and leaves ended up having a couple of different colour green threads while the flowers have a bunch of different orange threads during their applique process.
I used Aurifil 12wt cotton to hand quilt some detail in the piece - over the background and on the flowers themselves.
I was going to add a backing and finish it off like this, but thought, wouldn't it be cool to make some more scrappy blocks like this with different scrappy flowers? A quilt (QAYG) filled with different coloured Lolli-poppies?
So I may just do that.
