Red Scraps

It sat down yesterday and made a bunch of scrappy quarter log cabin using fabrics from my red scrap bag. I seem to have a lot of red fabric scraps, collected over the years.

These quarter log cabins are fun and easy to make and I pretty much chain piece the whole lot without cutting my thread until the last one is finished... and I don't press or trim them until the end.

Yep, I know. Not the right way to do it, but it works for me.

Book 15/26 in my 2021 reading challenge was The Mother Fault by Kate Mildenhall. I listened to this one as an audiobook and it was read by Claudia Karvan (an Aussie actress).

Imagining a near future Australia that is all too disturbingly familiar, The Mother Fault is an addictive thriller, a heart-pounding adventure and a moving portrayal of the lengths a mother will go to save her family.

Mim’s husband is missing. No one knows where Ben is, but everyone wants to find him – especially The Department. And they should know, the all-seeing government body has fitted the entire population with a universal tracking chip to keep them ‘safe’.

But suddenly Ben can’t be tracked. And Mim is questioned, made to surrender her passport and threatened with the unthinkable – her two children being taken into care at the notorious BestLife.

Cornered, Mim risks everything to go on the run to find her husband – and a part of herself, long gone, that is brave enough to tackle the journey ahead.

From the stark backroads of the Australian outback to a terrifying sea voyage, Mim is forced to shuck off who she was – mother, daughter, wife, sister – and become the woman she needs to be to save her family and herself.

I really enjoyed this book. It is set in a world not too dissimilar from ours where climate change has altered the physical environment and technology is life. The country is controlled by a one party state and life is quite grim with the loss of privacy and personal freedom.

The ending was twisty and fast and even though it ended, I think it left an opening for a continuation of the story. If you can find it, it's definitely worth a read.

    1. It was a good story, but I think Claudia Karvans voice made it more special. I borrowed it with the borrowbox app through my local library.

    1. You definitely should. They're really easy to do, but the sewing table gets rather messy as I rummage for and trim the next fabric piece.

    1. It was lots of fun and I could probably have kept going and made a lot more. I'm glad to have them put away now and waiting for the June colour announcement :)

  6. It's great that you have so many red scraps! Those blocks look really good. It's a color that's really lacking in my scraps bins, and my fabric stash. I couldn't find this book in either of my public library book apps, but I found a Kate Mildenhall title: "Skylarking." If an author is a good writer, as most are, then I'll surely enjoy it. Thanks!

    1. I have read good reviews about Skylarking and have it borrowed as an ebook on my phone. I'm part way through another story and will be reading this one next too. Hope you enjoy it :)
