Crumbs

In an uncharacteristic frenzy of cleaning and decluttering of my sewing room, I went through my scrap tubs and finished sorting the pieces into the different coloured bags, tossing the really small pieces into the bin as I went. By the end of the afternoon, my scraps were (mostly) nicely organised and I had a bin full of little pieces to throw out.

But then, the guilt started... so much fabric was going to be thrown away. What a waste! The next day I had a little rummage through the bin and pulled out pieces that weren't super small. And then started putting them into colour groups. Then though, hmmmm... I could sew these together and make something out of them.

At this stage, a scrap vortex quilt seems way more time and effort than I want to commit. But maybe something small with the prettier of the pieces...

Watch this space. Who knows what these crumbs will become.

Do you like sewing with scraps? What about crumbs?

How small is a scrap before you throw it out?

  1. I totally love scrap sewing..... I really only throw out half inch or less but recently I passed on a bunch of 1.5" squares as realistically I don't think I will use them.... Looking forward to seeing what yours become...

  2. I keep small triangles and anything bigger than a 1.5” square. All the scraps are sorted by colour in bins. I am making an effort in 2021 to use my scraps. I’ve made 5 quilt tops and three placemats so far. All the bins are still full...

  3. Our community has textile recycling - so I don't feel nearly as bad throwing out scraps. However, I do have quite a healthy scrap bin that I just keep stuffing fabric into. I'll use it someday!

  4. I love scraps, and almost everything I sew is from scraps in some way. The smallest I use as stuffing in pincushions. You'll find many ideas on my blog, so don't throw those bits away.

  5. I adore little scraps. I love crumbs. I love to just sew the pieces together. What I need are some quilt designs to use them. A scrap vortex is just too visually overwhelming for me. I keep scraps to 1 1/2", cut off triangles, etc. unless it is exceptionally ugly fabric.

  6. I need to do something like this one day with scraps that I have. I still have two small bins to go through and either cut to usable pre-cut sizes or sew together like this.

  7. All I can say Anorina is that great minds think alike! I just made something small using some scraps that I sewed in a free form crumb piecing style yesterday. I don't know when I will share it on my blog because it might be something I want to share as a Crafter's Edge Design. So be looking for it maybe in May, maybe sooner? I am looking forward to seeing what you end up making. I love the look of what you have done so far.

  8. Such lovely scraps, Anorina. It will be fun to watch this project grow, you may even inspire me to dive into the vortex. I set up my feedly account in preparation of feedburner's exit. I am loving that service! I can see at a glance, my favorite blogger's daily posts and can access their site with just a click.

  10. Doctor Anorina Frankenstein.
I do the same. Those little scraps are gems. And... this is wild, those tiny bits? they make amazing collages. This is a great idea. Your little blocks are wonderful

  11. I too enjoy making up crumb blocks, using up all those smaller bits & pieces. There's lots of potential once your 'made fabric' piece is big enough, e.g. re cut for HSTs.

  12. I confess, I try and use every little bit of my fabrics. Could explain why the stash doesn't seem to be getting any smaller, but I can't help it - I love all the little bits as much as the big ones!

  13. I have the most fun sewing from scraps. I made a king size quilt with solid rainbow sashings. Check it out @maker.quilts and enjoy the process. 🥰
