When I saw the theme was salt n sand, I immediately wanted to make something in beautiful blues and golden beachy colours. I ended up creating this 'Coastal Vibes' English paper pieced hexagon pillow, which I just love, love, love.
I started with dark blues in the top left corner and worked my way towards the lower right corner by adding lighter blues/turquoise hexies finishing with lighter creams and golds to represent the sky/surf/sand.
Once I'd sewn all of the hexagons together, I gave it a good press and then removed all of the papers. Another good press and then I placed it over a piece of batting and quilted straight lines diagonally across the piece.
After squaring the quilted piece, I used some favourite fabric to complete the envelope style back. The backing fabric is an old print by Sarah Watts for Cotton & Steel in a range called "From Porto with Love". Metallic gold sardines - how can you go wrong with those?!?

ReplyDeleteYay, I'd love to see your hexie pillow cover too. I love preparing hexies and making small projects with them, but not sure how I'd go make a hexagon quilt. They can get quite awkward to hold while stitching. Happy Stitching!

DeleteThese dreamy colors for a salt and sand theme are perfect. They flow from the ocean to the beach beautifully. The backing was a surprise and works wonderfully. I don’t have the desire nor the patience to sew hexies myself but I so love seeing them in the projects of others. They seem to be able to create a huge variety of designs. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Annie. Sewing hexies can be a little slow and I seem to be extra slow at it, but I find it's a great craft to pick up and stitch here and there when you have a few spare moments (or in the car while hubby drives).

DeleteHow wonderful is this pillow! You nailed the salt and sand theme, and... actually, you used my favorite colors. This would suit my sewing room perfectly - a nice contrast to my aqua easy chair. When you've seen it enough, think of me! I think it's a beauty.

DeleteFabulous hexi pillow. I have to laugh at the sardines. They are perfect in gold, but not so perfect in the microwave. I still have nightmares over my boys "nuking" them in the microwave when they were little. It was a stinky mess and the cable TV repairman who was here at the time went outside and threw up! LOL!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI cut the fabric just with my rotary cutter or scissors and then wrap it around the hexagon papers for English Paper Piecing. It's quite fun, though I'm very slow at it :)
