A few years ago, we went to the Robertson show. It's a type of country fair where people display their animals, produce, crafts etc. The kids go on rides and eat food from vans and trucks. It's really a lot of fun and sadly, all of the local shows were cancelled last year due to the bush fires and this year, they're cancelled again due to the pandemic. Fingers crossed for next year.
Anyways, back to the Robertson show. It was here that I first saw glass gem corn and fell in love. It's just so pretty and unusual and honestly, if I hadn't seen it in person, I'd have thought it was fake.
When Covid started, it was early autumn here. Hubby was online buying some seeds to plant for our winter garden and asked if I wanted anything added to the cart. I had a look to see what was on offer and saw glass gem corn seeds. I pressed "Add to Cart" and before we knew it, 20 seeds arrived in the post along with his other seeds.
When it was time to plant (around October) we gave a few seeds to my dad to plant in his veggie patch and planted a few here.
I think this one is my favourite glass gem corn cob |
This week, we harvested the corn and honestly, it's much more exciting to unwrap these corn cobs than the regular yellow sweet corn.
Each one is different and very beautiful (if you can call corn 'beautiful').
We didn't take great care of the plants, but will save some seeds (kernels) to plant again next season. We'll prepare the soil and give it way more fertiliser, water and generally lot's more TLC.
We bought our seeds from Eden Seeds (Australia) but you can also get them from Amazon.
From what I've read, this corn isn't as tasty as regular yellow sweet corn. It's good for making popcorn and cornmeal. It may not be tasty, but geez it's pretty.
Like little round gemstones. I've never seen anything like it.
ReplyDeletethey are just gorgeous....

This is beautiful. I wonder if it keeps this look when dry. I'm sure some crafty people could do something nice with it.
ReplyDeleteI thought they were real glass stones that you'd threaded - beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteLovely to see while we're waiting for the snow to end....I cannot wait for garden season to begin again.
ReplyDeleteThat corn is so cool! I have never seen anything like it! Lots of colour inspiration, for a quilt perhaps, in every cob!
ReplyDeleteThey look too pretty to eat... hope you enjoyed them...xox
ReplyDeleteAfter being in relationship with Wilson for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that don’t believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I meant a spell caster called Dr Zuma zuk and I email him, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. Anybody could need the help of the spell caster, his email: spiritualherbalisthealing@gmail.com or WhatsApp him +15068001647 you can email him if you need his assistance in your relationship or anything. ReplyDeleteGolly! That corn just sparkles! It almost looks like you oiled it before taking pictures. :-) I can understand why you wanted to try planting some for yourself. I was just about to ask what you DO with it when you said it can be popped. I'm a pushover for a bowl of fresh-popped popcorn (not the microwaveable sort), and would eat popcorn every day if I could afford the calories from all the butter! :-) But, would you please take a picture of it if you pop some? I'd really like to see what it looks like then. And give us a review of how it tastes. Glad you found a small way to add fun to these pandemic days.
ReplyDeleteThose corn cobs are just beautiful.
