Cat-oween

Everything is black and gold 

Black and gold tonight;

Yellow pumpkins, yellow moon, 

Yellow candle-light. 


Jet-black cat with golden eyes, 

Did you see him blink? 

Black bats flying overhead 

Shadows black as ink. 


Black and gold, black and gold, 

Nothing in between, 

When the world turns black and gold, 

Then it’s Hallowe’en. 



Happy Cat-oween Pincushion

We don't really celebrate halloween here in Australia. Sure, the shops and grocery stores have been trying to inspire us for years to buy all sorts of ghoulish costumes, out-of-season pumpkins, decorations and tonnes of sweets, but I expect that it just hasn't caught on as they'd have liked. 

In saying all of this, I'm a sucker for a blog hop so I just had to join in with Marian of Seams to be Sew and the fun of Halloween Hoppers. 

My project for the Halloween Hoppers blog hop is my Cat-oween Pincushion. 


The embroidery design is from Urban Threads and honestly, I spent a really long time going through their designs before deciding on this one of a cute kitty cat with bat wings. 

If you love to stitch, you really need to go and visit the website. They often have sales and you can purchase some patterns for as little as 50c.

I worked the black embroidery in 3 (of the 6) strands of Aurifil floss. The golden tan highlights are 2 strands, just to emphasise some little areas of the kitten.

It's been a while since I sat down to do any embroidery, so it was quite nice to sit on on the back deck and stitch while listening to an audiobook.

    That turned out fantastic. I enjoy simple embroidery and love the way you used two colors in certain areas to give the pattern depth. It's a great idea that I have to try sometime. Thanks for spreading the word about Urban Threads. I have been buying their patterns for years and they do have some incredible designs.

    Adorable pincushion! I love cats and this one is just so cute! You embroidery is beautiful. Love the colors you chose. I did not know Australia did not have Halloween. It's one of my favorite times of the year, but that could just be the witch in me. LOL

    Believe it or not, even though Halloween is a pretty big deal here in the US, I don't like it one bit. There's nothing fun or healthy about it, in my opinion. That said, I sure like a small, quick embroidery project, and I'm happy yours filled the bill. It's cute and you enjoyed it, and that's what counts. What book did you listen to while stitching? I'm always up for an audiobook recommendation.

      Thanks for stopping by. A little bit of embroidery is a lovely way to pass some time :)
      I was listening to an audiobook called "One Hundred Years of Dirt" by an Australian journalist called Rick Morton. It's certainly been eye opening hearing about his life growing up on a cattle station in the middle of Australia and his family saga.

    Oh I think that Bat Cat is adorable. I am not a big fan of Halloween having grown up with the maiden name of Trick in the USA, but I do decorate for fall with a few ghosts, witches and pumpkins.
