It was a lovely warm autumn day yesterday with my backyard thermometer getting up over 30C. Today is meant to reach the high 20's again and then a cool change will sweep through with max temperatures forecast in the high teens to celebrate Mothers Day.
Why all this temperature talk? Well, I did a little bit of work on my temperature quilt yesterday for Friday Night with Friends (FNwF) hosted by Cheryll.
I was surprised to find that there was only one day in January 2020 that got to over 40C. I'm sure that our backyard thermometer got to the mid 40's on a few days, but I don't have those records, so I'm going with the official numbers on the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website.
I prepared some petals to complete the end of January and move into the start of February 2020.
To make these petals, I trace my template on to some very thin interfacing. I turn my stitch length down to around 1.5 and sew them down onto the back of the fabric. I trim the excess fabric and interfacing around the sewn line leaving a seam approx 1/4" and even down to 1/8" near the points.
I cut a little slit into the centre of the interfacing and turn them out using the point of my hera marker to turn them out as neatly and sharply as possible. This takes a little while so it's a good job to do while watching the telly.
Once these are ready, I centre them on to a low-temp square and applique them down with teeny stitches in matching thread. I do find these best to do during the day time with good light. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be, especially when working at night and distracted by whatever film or show we're watching.
Last nights TV distraction was Jamie Oliver cooking up all sorts of things on his 'Keep Cooking and Carry On' show. He made a few yummy looking dishes which I will definitely try soon - I might even try his Cauliflower Mac & Cheese tonight. I've linked up his video on YouTube, in case you'd like to try it too sometime.

You have some pretty petals there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen. They take a little while to prepare, but will be much easier to applique down rather than trying to get even petals if I had to needle-turn. Hope you enjoy your Sunday x
DeleteWe are still in T-shirts here. Love your orange peels....I have a hankering for an orange peel quilt one day. Happy Mother's Day to you x
ReplyDeleteWe had quite warm ones the past couple of days, but it's cooled right down today. It's lucky because my kids got me a lovely mustard coloured cardigan for mothers day which I'll get to wear.
DeleteYes, I'd been wanting to make an orange peel quilt for ages, so figured this was the ideal opportunity (or I may never have gotten around to it).
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I hope you enjoy those yummy looking mothers day cupcakes too xx
Lovely bright orange peels for the temp quilt... still having lovely warm days here too...
ReplyDeleteHave a Happy Mothers Day 💐
Hi Maria, yes it's been lovely the past few days, but much cooler today which I don't mind at all. I quite like the cooler weather. I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend x
DeleteOooh, so pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteVery pretty orange peels. We ha e had a cold wet weekend here.
ReplyDeleteThank you. We just facetimed my IL's in Melbourne and they mentioned that it's been quite cold and wet these past few days down there. Hopefully some of that wet stuff makes it's way across this way.
DeleteAlso, guess what I got for mothers day. Yep, a wasgij puzzle! I mentioned it to them and was surprised they managed to find one and have it shipped in time for me to open this morning.
Thank you so much for the idea. I look forward to starting it later this afternoon.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend xx
Your temperature quilt is going to be amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it starts to look with the cooler weather blocks. I did put together a block yesterday with a yellow petal and a yellow background because there was only a 2 degree difference in the high and low. Contemplated to using a petal and just having the background, but it might look odder than having both the same colour.
DeleteI hope you have a lovely weekend x
Hi Anorina I am enjoying watching your progress with this ,happy Mother's Day my friend, lol I have been watching cooking shows too xx
ReplyDeleteLovely petals and so nice of you to show how you make them
ReplyDeleteIt is freezing here at the moment
We have had a lot of rain in Sth Gippland
Great activity for an evening of TV watching. Love how neat they look.
ReplyDeleteLove your style of temperature quilt.
ReplyDeleteThat was a great project to work on at FNwF. Thanks for dropping in...xox
ReplyDeleteIt is very cold here but we did have a glimpse of sunshine yesterday. I love the beautiful colours of your applique.
ReplyDeleteYour temperature quilt is looking very pretty. Is there a reason for the different background fabrics or just to look good? I've never seen one that changed backgrounds -- that's why I was asking. Really, really pretty!
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting method of making your Orange Peels. Thanks for sharing! Might need to give that a try with some of the fusible I have leftover from making T-Quilts.
