Sewing with my girl: a pillow for Lexie

It's no secret that I really enjoy making custom scrappy patchwork pillows as gifts for family or friends. I also take custom orders for these very unique pillows through my Facebook page. They make especially great gifts for people with unusual names.

My daughters friend had her birthday today, so we sat down in my sewing room and made one for her. My little lady chose all of the patchwork fabrics (it's lucky I had a big tub of 2.5" squares all ready cut up for my Twirling at the Disco quilt).

She then pieced the patchwork and pressed it so that the seams would match. I was so pleased to see her listen and learn to what I was teaching. We added the applique background panel, sandwiched this with some lovely cotton batting and then quilted it with simple straight lines.

I printed up the 'Lexie' for the fusible and appliqued it for her. We then assembled the backing (simple envelope) and put it all together.

It was really nice spending the day with my girl, doing what I love and hopefully showing her it's fun to do. Who knows, she may decide that she'll make a quilt next!

In other news, I borrowed my mums dehydrator and have tried dehydrating apples and pears. It's been going for about 10 hours at around 40C. I don't know how much longer the fruit will need, but will probably turn it off now for the night.

Anyone have any advice for dehydrating food?

Any foods that you just love when dehydrated?

  1. That is a fabulous cushion and you can never have too many cushions. I have just been making some as Christmas presents, I am actually getting a head start this year! I have made a lap quilt as a Christmas present for a friend and am using up the leftover fabric as matching cushions for her. I am sure that her friend loved that she had made her a handmade gift. For a beginner she definitely has the gift for sewing and choosing colours. x

    1. Hi Kay, what a great idea to get started on Christmas gifts. Most years, in April, it feels as though Christmas wasn't that long ago, but this year, Christmas feels like a distant memory with all that is going on in the world. I may need to follow your lead and start making for Christmas too.
And yes, her friend loved her cushion and sent a photo later in the afternoon with it sitting right in the middle of her bed.

  2. Shallow blob of yogurt on a piece of parchment paper makes a nice "fruit leather" type thing.

    1. Hi Janice, this one is 16" finished. Seems to be a good size for laying on the bed when they read or play with ipads.
