Birds in the Air Quilted Pillow

Bird Games is finished and gosh I loved creating this project. These bold fabric colours are a couple of my favourites and I just love how the work together. Eggplant and aqua blue. Perfect!

'Birds in the Air' is the Project Quilting, Season 11.4 challenge. The challenge was to create a project which included the traditional block called 'Birds in the Air'.

I'm not usually a fan of HST's and honestly try to steer clear of them, but I decided to embrace this challenge and ended up making four of them to complete this pillow. And I'm really glad that I did.

The block is made up of triangles in two different sizes. My blocks are 9" and so these four make a great size cushion with an 18" insert.

Birds in the Air - 9" block

Birds in the Air - (4) 9" block

If you'd like to make one too, here are the fabric measurements which I used for each block:

Aqua: (3) 3 7/8" squares cut diagonally to yield 6 HST
Purple: (2) 3 7/8" squares cut diagonally to yield 3 HST (1 extra)
Purple: (1) 9 7/8" square cut diagonally to yield 2 HST (1 extra)

If you'd like to make an 18" pillow like I did, just multiply these amounts by 4 and you're ready to stitch one up too.

To finish my pillow, I fused pellon to the back and stitched in the ditch. I then hera marked lines in an hourglass design to add some hand quilting detail in a lovely lilac DMC Perle 8 cotton. I really love the texture.

This was a really fun challenge and now I'm looking forward to the next one. If you'd like to join in the fun, you still have time. Read the Project Quilting blog post to get all of the details.

  1. I love the Birds in the Air block, but I have a paper pieced pattern for it which I find gives perfect results really easily without any waste. Mine's 12 inches square, though! Love your colour combination :-)
