Wednesday

It's the last full week of the summer school holidays here so we're trying to make the most of it, even though the teen/tween aren't overly enthusiastic about all of my ideas for 'fun' activities.

We ventured into Darling Harbour (Sydney) and spent a few hours at the Wildlife Park and the Sydney Aquarium. It was quite a warm day, so this was a nice way to stay a little bit cooler. It seemed as though half of Sydney had the same idea as we did because both attractions were crowded.

The Wildlife Sydney Zoo is only small compared with Taronga Zoo which is across the harbour. This zoo features Australian animals in displays created to mirror their native habitat. We started out walking through the butterfly enclosure and then on to see the other animals who live there. Lot's of lizards, frogs and snakes. Wallabies, Kangaroos and Quokas.

Rocky the Saltwater Crocodile at Sydney Wildlife Zoo

There is even a 4.5m saltwater crocodile who lives there. He's called Rocky - because he originally called Rockhampton (in QLD) home. Rocky's trainer was giving a talk just as we got to that exhibit - perfect timing on our part. It seems Rocky likes to live the bachelor life. Twice trainers thought he might be interested in mating, but both times, it didn't end so well for the female crocs.

We finished our little adventure at the zoo by visiting the koalas. These guys must be the best fed and most photographed koalas in the country. All were snoozing except for one which was enjoying his eucalyptus leaf lunch.

We'd been to the Sydney Aquarium a number of times over the years, so it was only a quick walk-through visit, dodging prams and toddlers as we went.

After about a bazillion steps yesterday, we got home with tired legs and feet, so it was nice to just sit down and play with some fabric and hexies. I had run out of 1" hexagon papers, so used my Fiskars Hexagon Paper Punch (bought at Spotlight a number of years ago).

The XL size makes perfect 1" hexagons. I recycled some old manilla (cardboard) folders for my hexagons which worked a treat. If you see one of these punches in your local quilt or craft store, I highly recommend one. It will save you a lot of money in the long run, especially as those packets of papers cost around $5 for 100.

  1. A lovely day out. We have lost too many koalas here in Vic with the bushfires. The wildlife population has suffered awfully. Love your hexies..says the hexie addict lol.

The paper piecing using a puncher is a great idea.
I look forward to seeing the finished quilt.
