Happy Friday friends. It's all a little bit green around here lately. I've been sewing with a lot of green fabric lately, which is very unlike me as I generally tend towards the pinks, oranges and reds.
I had a fair few scrappy strips of green prints remaining, so I thought I'd make a great big table mat. It's not the prettiest thing I've ever made, but it's going to be great to place in the centre of our dinner table with huge steaming platters of food.
To make this mat, I used scraps of batting, trimmed and butted together, sewn with a zig zag stitch. I then used an old glue basted a large old cotton tea-towel under the batting for general sizing.
My strips were of varying lengths and widths so I cut the batting piece into 4 and sewed on my strips with the QAYG method. Super easy and super duper fast.
Once I decided on the arrangement of the 4 newly quilted pieces, I sewed them together with a decorative stitch on my machine. It's a little bit like a blanket stitch, but on both sides. I'm sure it has a proper name, but I'll go with a double blanket stitch.
I added a backing fabric, and did a little bit of ditch sewing to hold the pieces together and bound with the remaining scraps. It feels good to use up all of the scrappy bits.
In other news, doesn't my Golden Pothos Plant (Devil's Ivy) look content sitting on the new mat? She normally lives in my sewing room, but came outside for a bit of a glamour shoot. Of my indoor plants, this one is the one that is happiest and looks the healthiest.
My succulents are not really loving this cold winter weather. Other than the usual gale force winds that we get this time every year, we got a fair bit of rain yesterday, so I ran out in the afternoon to move plants around under the back undercover area. The pots were saturated and I'm hoping they dry out over the coming days.
As much as I dislike the heat, bring on spring!

With kids growing up too quickly, hubby says that my succulents have taken over as my babies (with the amount of attention I give them).
DeleteIt is lovely Anorina!! Perfect scrap busting project too. I never knew the name of the above 'ivy' - it is one that does best in our home. I often cut it down and transplant - so it is in abundance around our home. Enjoy your lovely mat!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm pleased to have something new to use at our dining table (that's not all old and stained looking). Yes the devils ivy is quite good here in my area too. I'm hoping to get a few more little nodes before I cut it pieces to make more pots for around the house.

DeleteI am a fan of green, so I love your table mat! Thanks for showing it and it gave me a great idea! I don't grow succulents at all, but have pothos pots galore! They are very easy to grow aren't they?

Hello Minnesota! I'm actually reading a book at the moment which is based around Mankato, Minnesota. It's called Storm Front by John Sandford and I'm really quite enjoying it.
