This past week, the 52 Frames photo challenge theme was 'Black and White'. I had a lot of ideas but just kept procrastinating... thinking about black and white things to photograph, rather than actually taking any pictures.

At first, I played around with just using the B&W filter on photo apps to turn a colour photo into a black and white photo. It works quite well, especially with a starting picture with great contrast.

I then used my actual camera, changed the setting to black and white and went about taking pictures.

In the end, the photo which I submitted (first photo up top) to the 52 Frames photo challenge was one which I took with my iPhone using the Noir filter. I love the movement of the people on the carnival ride, in this shot. After a very hot and sunny day, clouds were beginning to form for an afternoon storm. The clouds weren't very noticeable to the naked eye, probably because it was still super bright and glary, but the black and white filter seemed to pick up the forming clouds in the sky quite beautifully.

Next weeks photo challenge theme is 'smell'. I'd better get my thinking cap on!

  1. Cool photos, I've not thought before of how the camera can pick up different lights/shades in Band W mode...sounds like it was fun experimenting! (And interesting to see the difference between your two soup photos, when I scrolled through your posts.)

    1. Thank you! Yes, the soup worked much better in the colour photograph. Perhaps a dark bowl would have made it a more successful B & W picture. This week, the theme is "smell" so I've been trying to think of new ideas. This one is tricky.
