For everyday use, I like to use placemats on the dining table. Sure, when we have guests or parties, I’ll use a table cloth, but when its just our family, I have a tray in the centre of the table with placemats. Some of these are quite old. Like, really, REALLY old. I made them years ago when I wanted to practice free motion quilting and machine binding.
I figured it was time to make new ones (and perhaps get rid of some of the older faded ones). I bought some of this lovely “Wildwood” print by Cloud 9 Fabrics from Spotlight the other week and really wanted to use it in a project where it would be the hero. This and the other “Wildwood” prints were in the dress fabric section, and luckily for me, I was in the queue at the cutting counter and saw it. Normally I’d just head to the quilting fabric section. I really must explore the dress fabric section a little more next time I visit. Who knows what other treasures I may find.
I made these new placemats which include a little bit of machine applique. It’s really simple and a great beginner project plus all of the materials can be sourced from your local Spotlight store.
I’ve created a little tutorial and included the pattern for the All Seasons Placemats which you can use to create some of your own, if you like. Why All Seasons? Well I thought that since these are so quick (and really quite simple) to make, it might be fun to create a new set for each season (ie darker colours for winter and oranges/browns for autumn etc).
