I’ve been working on a secret squirrel project, which means that I can’t show more than a sneaky little peek. It’s a fun project for a little boy and I will share it very soon, but until then, I thought I’d share a quick little tutorial on how to make this sail boat block.
These measurements will make a 12” (finished) Sail Boat Block.
White Solid Fabric
(4) 3 ½” squares
(3) 3 7/8” squares - cross cut diagonally to make (6) HST’s
Yellow Print Fabric
(2) 3 7/8” squares - cross cut diagonally to make (4) HST’s
Orange Print Fabric
(2) 3 ½” squares
(1) 3 7/8” square - cross cut diagonally to make (2) HST’s
Turquoise Print Fabric
(4) 3 ½” squares
I find the easiest way to put this block together, is to lay out all of the pieces on a mat beside my sewing machine.
Firstly, chain piece all of the HSTs (half square triangles). Trim and press the seams open.
Lay out the pieces back in the correct order.
Sew the pieces into rows. Press.
Sew the rows together to create the block. Press.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
Need to make a baby boy quilt? Make 9 of these blocks and sew them in a 3 x 3 configuration - a fun little quilt for a baby boy.
