As promised the other day, here is a quick tutorial on how to make the super easy and super fun, Flutter By block - using pre-cuts.
I used a layer cake for my tutorial but a jelly roll would probably work better.
Begin with a layer cake square. A layer cake square which measures 10” x 10”.
Cut as per the diagram below. A picture is worth a thousand words, right?
From that second strip from the left, cut 3.5” from the bottom which will leave a 2.5” x 6.5” strip. That 3.5” piece can go into your scrap basket along with the 1” strip.
Now rotate the 6.5” x 10” piece (to make it easier to cut) and cross-cut 4 strips which will measure 2.5” x 6.5”.
Did that make sense? The diagram below shows the cutting measurements.
Now go ahead and cut up a few different layer cake squares. Have a few different colours and prints ready for the construction.
You will also need some background fabric which will form little pinwheels when the quilt is all put together. I was going to use a solid white, but there is a lot of white in the layer cake which I’m using, so I decided to use a print fabric – white with black squiggly lines through it.
For a single Flutter By block, you will need 4 x 2.5” squares. Or you can go ahead and cut a whole bunch of 2.5” strips from the WOF and then cross cut them into 2.5”squares. It will save time in the long run.
Next step is to draw a diagonal pencil line on the back of the 2.5” square fabric. This step isn’t absolutely necessary if you’re a confident sewer, but I’ve drawn a line to show in the example.
Okay, now you’re ready to assemble.
Decide on your fabrics. In my example, the purple print will be the wings and the white flower print is the body.
Lay the background squares facing down as shown in the second image. Be sure to lay them as shown in the diagram otherwise your wings won’t be correct.
Sew on the drawn lines and then cut a 1/4” past the line. Do this for all 4 background squares.
Press them open and stitch to the body.
Press the block and there you have cute little Flutter By block. Arrange them in an alternating layout for a fun quilt design.
