This past couple of weeks, I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to review the new book Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley.
I’ve been such a big fan of Camille’s fabric lines for Moda Fabrics and I honestly think that Bliss is still my favourite all time favourite fabric range. I am hoarding a charm pack of Bliss and about 10 half yards - for that special project. I’ll know it when I see it, but for now I’m content in the knowledge that it’s sitting on my shelf awaiting it’s destiny.
Not only is Camille Roskelley known for her beautiful fabrics. Her quilt patterns are stunning and well written. I personally have a few which I purchased from her online store. The Swoon quilt pattern was an internet sensation, with every second person in the online quilting community joining in and making their own Swoon quilt.
Simply Retro is an absolutely beautiful book. It is filled with fun quilts which can be made with pre-cuts (ie charm packs, layer cakes etc).
From the introduction of Simply Retro:
The blocks for the quilts in this book are a delightful mix of classic blocks, updated blocks, and blocks that combine traditional elements to create a fresh, yet retro look. For example, I absolutely love to make baby quilts using just one traditional quilt block, but using it nice and big! It makes the traditional block feel new and fresh and is a great way to showcase the newest fabrics.
You can see this at work in the Baby Love quilts that are based on the Churn
Dash block. In one version is a traditional 12˝ block that is repeated, but in the
other version is a jumbo size block that feels much more modern.
This week, I was inspired to create my very own Baby Love Quilt with the 9 smaller Churn Dash blocks.
A friend had a baby recently, so I will be busily quilting and finishing this quilt for a visit on Sunday afternoon.
Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley utilizes modern print fabric combinations and innovative techniques. It puts a new spin on traditional block quilting and is a fresh interpretation of classic blocks in 12 fun and achievable projects – projects which are perfect for quilters of all skill levels.
I’ve already picked out my next quilt project from Simply Retro. It’s a quilt called Dapper Canon (image below).
It is made with 6 Fat Quarters and some coordinating solid yardage and looks like a lot of fun to make. The hardest part would be choosing the fabrics.
With thanks to CT Publishing, I have a copy of Simply Retro with Camille Roskelley to giveaway to a lucky Samelia’s Mum reader.
To enter, simply leave a comment below telling me:

ReplyDeleteNot sure if these were available elsewhere in Australia but they were a recess requirement in SA during the 80's!!
oh definitely would be a fondue party at my place!
ReplyDeleteWould have to be the bright handkerchief top my mother made for me. I loved that top! Very bright pink and orange!!!!
ReplyDeleteDear lady,
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful book.
Only the cover of the book has already seen good taste ...
I would love to get it, even if they will not win it.
What I think is a must-retro??
Must retro for me is the small kindnesses that ancient people and educated and has had in dealing with staff in their day to day ...
Must retro is to be polite, gentle. Having ways.
a big hug from Maria Filomena,
of Portugal
PS - excuse me - I am writing through google translator.
Oh, I remember the handkerchief top! I made one too. It would have to go with my first pair of bell bottoms, white and grey with suspenders. I loved those pants!
ReplyDeleteI would not step foot into a retro party without my great grandmother's diamond brooch, and my mother in law's teal glass martini set. Actually, I rarely step foot anywhere without them!
ReplyDeleteA fantastic vintage dress with a twirly skirt and a cute little ruffled Half Apron in co-ordinating fabrics
ReplyDeleteA record player with a pile of 45's. :)
ReplyDeleteA disco ball. Every party needs one of those, right?
ReplyDeleteRetro party mmmmm the flared pants from Saturday night fever

Rice salad. Oh yes, I remember the Fondue pot - bits of meat cooked in a broth and then dipped into different sauces - lots of fun.

ReplyDeleteMust have poodle skirts
ReplyDeleteWhich era is retro? I think it was when I was a young child...You know, I miss the punch bowl at parties, it may or may not be spiked LOL with all the little cups hanging around the edge!
ReplyDeleteI think I would certainly have to wear a string of pearls!
ReplyDeleteOk, it would have to be the punch made from lime sherbet, pineapple juice and ginger ale. I remember it from the 60's and 70's and it still tastes good!
ReplyDeleteI would love some chocolate!! Maybe flowing out of a fountain :-)
ReplyDeleteI think I'd have to bring some vintage pyrex, I can't get enough of that stuff!

ReplyDeleteWe still have a Fondue pot and long forks so I would bring it to a Retro party:)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to bring one of my mum's maxi dresses from the 70's to a retro party - perhaps even wear it!
ReplyDeleteI'd wear my DBs...dessert boots. And seeing as it is a party I'd replace the laces with fluro coloured ribbons just like I did in the 60s...just don't ask me why, there is no answer :)
ReplyDeleteCan I say 2..pot of coffee & my house slippers :)
ReplyDeleteThere would have to be some Tupperware with crazy dips, that awful patchwork skirt or an apron. I still have a goofy hat somewhere and white gloves.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember what it is called but the mashed potato rapped in Devon yum!!
ReplyDeleteA flared pants jumpsuit. And some Abba music!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't even a baby when things 'retro' were kitsch, but I absolutely adore the calve-length maxi skirts that flare out and look fabulous when dancing rock'n'roll - something I used to LOVE to do a good 8-9 years ago!!
ReplyDeleteA cheese and pineapple hedgehog.
ReplyDeleteI remember my Hot Pants and Boots, Flower Power, Rock'nRoll and Petticoats.
ReplyDeletePrawn cocktail and black forest gateau!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely bright red lipstick. THanks for the giveaway :)
ReplyDeleteAqua Net, mascara the one in the little red case with the little brush you used water to use! Let's not forget the White lipstick!
