Easter is only a few weeks away. Before we know it, the Easter Bunny will have dropped chocolate Easter Eggs all over the garden for our little ones to collect.
And what better way to collect Easter Eggs than in a specially made Easter Basket?
I’m sharing my Hoppy Easter Basket tutorial and pattern today.
This pattern was originally featured last Easter in Handmade Magazine, so now that Easter has come around again, I’m able to share it with my Samelia’s Mum friends.
Measures approximately 8” high x 9” wide x 3” deep
Materials Needed:
5” x 6” (or larger which can then be trimmed back to this size) White Cotton Fabric
5” x 6” Fusible Pellon
DMC Stranded Embroidery Cotton in pink (3607) and charcoal (3799)
Pencil
No 9 Crewel needle
5 x 10” squares of co-ordinating fabrics (I used 5 x layer cake squares from the Sherbet Pips range of fabrics by Moda)
11” x 20” piece of batting (approximately)
Lightbox (optional)
Neutral thread for piecing
White thread for machine applique
Cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler
Iron and ironing board
General sewing supplies
Embroidery:
Download and Print the bunny pattern HERE
Trace the bunny design onto the white fabric over a lightbox or against a well-lit window.
Fuse the Pellon to the back.
Using 2 strands of thread, back-stitch the bunny design, in pink (3607).
Back-stitch the whiskers and mouth in charcoal thread (3799) and then satin- stitch the eyes and nose in charcoal (3799).
When complete, press it lightly.
Cutting:
Handles
Choose a square and cut into 2.5” x 10” strips (yield 4 strips)
Put these aside for use on basket construction later.
Assembly Instructions:
Sew 2 of the co-ordinating 10” squares together and then press the seam open.
Place on top of the batting (right side up) and pin to hold the 2 layers in place.
Stitch in the ditch and then approximately ¼” on either side of the ditch – this will hold the 2 layers together.
Trim the batting so that it is the same size as the fabric top.
Pin the stitchery to the front of the grey fabric square ensuring that it is slightly above centre.
Using a small zig-zag stitch, applique the stitchery – capturing the edge of the stitchery and the edge of the background fabric.
Fold the bag so that the rights sides are together and stitch together the 2 opposite sides.
Fold the bag so that the inside opposing seams are together and then using the ruler measure and mark the 1.5” line.
Sew along the line and then trim off the excess corner piece ensuring a 1/4” seam. Repeat for the other side.
Handles
Place 2 of the 2.5” strips, right sides facing.
Sew along each long edge.
Turn out and then press so that the edges are crisp
Stitch along each long side using a 1/8” seam.
Repeat this process for the 2 remaining 2.5” strips.
Pin these 2 strips to either side of the basket (one on each side of the seam) and attach it to the basket with a very small seam. This is just to hold the handles in place.
Basket Lining
Use the remaining 2 x 10” squares and sew them together. Press the seams open.
Sew the 2 sides together and make the box edges – the same way as the main basket.
Finishing:
Turn the main basket inside out and the lining inside out. Place the lining inside of the main basket (right sides facing). Align the tops and pin them together.
Sew all the way around the top of the baskets leaving a gap big enough to turn out.
Turn the baskets back out and fold the open edge in. Press the top of the basket for a sharp, neat edge.
Stitch around the top (approximately 1/8” – 1/16”) which will close up the gap which was used for turning out.
Now take the basket out to the garden and see what yummy treats the Easter bunny has left for you.
