A couple of weeks ago I showed you my Liquorice All Sort Cushion. HERE is the post if you’d like to go and have a look.

Well I’ve been at it again, and made another variation of the cushion. I have to admit that I may be slightly addicted to making them. Working with all of this colour makes me very very happy.

I’ve called this one my Rainbow All-Sort Cushion.

Isn’t it funny how re-arranging the blocks can make the end product look so different?

To make this cushion, I’ve made 4 x 8.25” string blocks.

To make my string blocks, I’ve cut 4 squares of printer paper measuring 8.25” square.

Place the black strip across the diagonal and use a tiny dot of fabric glue to hold it in place.

Then it’s time to add the strips. Take the first strip and place it down over the black strip, right sides facing and the edges aligned.

Make sure the strip is going to be long enough (that it will go over the edges of the paper).

Reduce the stitch length on your sewing machine to around 0.8 – 1.0. This will make for easier paper removal at the end. Trust me! You don’t want to sit there with tweezers trying to remove paper when it’s done.

Sew through the 3 layers with a 1/4” seam.

Flip over the coloured strip and press. Take your next coloured strip and repeat. Continue to the end of the square of paper. Flip it over and do the other side.

Trim the fabric by cutting around the paper. Then remove the paper.

Make 4 of these blocks and then arrange how you please to make your cushion top.

I used a thin poly batting and hand quilted my cushion top with silver/grey perle 8 cotton. I love the texture of the cushion top.

I found some more bright fabric for the back.

A Fat Quarter is the perfect size for the back.

Layer it with some batting and quilt it. I quilted mine with straight lines approximately 1” apart.

I’ve made Rainbow All-Sort and envelope style cushion. Zippers scare me.
