My 12 days of Christmas table runner is complete.
It was very easy to make and great for a beginner so I thought I'd show you how I made it. As we're approaching the festive season, I thought I'd make a Christmas one, but it doesn't have to be. You can use any fabrics you like.
I started off with a charm pack though all you'd need is 27 x 5" squares of your favourite fabrics.
You want to make 3 x 9 patch blocks so swap your squares around until you find combinations you're pleased with and sew those together
Cut your block in half vertically and horizontally. I found it easier to just measure 2 1/4" of your inside column of squares and cut there.
Once you've cut your block both vertically and horizontally, mix up your new little blocks until you're happy with the layout.
Sew your 2 top blocks together and your 2 bottom blocks together ensuring you press the seams in opposite directions. This will help you match up the centre seams when you put it all together.
Sew the top 2 blocs to the bottom 2 blocs and there you go, a block is now complete. That wasn't so hard, was it?
Now go ahead and make the other 2 blocks with the rest of your fabric squares.
When you're done, arrange and sew your 3 blocks together.
And you end up with a lovely bright table runner top.
Add some batting (great for using up small pieces that you couldn't bring yourself to throw away). Choose a backing fabric.
Quilt it.
Bind it.
And you're done.
If you make a runner with these instructions, let me know how you go with it :-)
Any feedback is very very very welcome.

ReplyDeleteThis is sooo great! Thanks so much for the tutorial. Would you mind giving me an idea on how you did the quilting? I know how to quilt, but I'd like to know how you decided where to actually quilt. I can see there's a pattern, but I couldn't quite figure it out from the pictures. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to have found this tutorial! I had planned to make a couple of Christmas table runners for friends and had purchased my fabric but was needing inspiration . . . this is my first attempt at quilting . . . and using my walking foot. I was absolutely thrilled with the result! Thanks so much!
